some nights
I lie
facedown
on the floor

waiting
for it
to swallow me

Me, Myself, and I: A Romance in Grammar

November 14, 2012 § Leave a comment

I talk to You
but You don’t talk to I;
You talk to Me

You talk to Me,
but Me can’t talk back;
Me can’t talk.

Me cannot talk to You,
Me cannot smile at You,
Me cannot even look Your way,
but I do.

I love You,
but You don’t love I;
You love Me.

I ask Myself why
This should be,
but Myself cannot reply,
only I.

can’t You see
that You and I could be a We?
but You don’t want to be with I;
You want to be with Me,

and You and Me
could only be an Us,
and Us could not do the things
We could.

We could love Each Other
We could live together
We could raise little Him’s and little Her’s
to be He’s and She’s.

We could be a perfect plural
but Us cannot do these things;
Us cannot do.

You and I could be a We,
but You don’t want to be with I
You want to be with Me,
talk to Me,
waste your love on Me

I ask Myself why
This should be,
but Myself cannot reply,
only I.

can’t You see?
